BREAKING NEWS: Senate Passes Bill to Preserve Single-Sex Bathroom Privacy
COLUMBUS–Moments ago, the Ohio Senate passed Amended Senate Bill 104 (SB104) by a 24-7 vote. The bill now heads to Governor DeWine.
Originally HB183, sponsored by Representatives Beth Lear (R-Galena) and Adam Bird (R-New Richmond), this legislation was amended into SB104 and would require schools and colleges to designate separate bathrooms, locker rooms, and overnight accommodations for males and females in the school building, as well as any facility used for a school-sponsored event. If passed into law, SB104 would ensure men cannot claim to be female and enter women’s private spaces in academic facilities and vice versa.
The following statement is from CCV Policy Director David Mahan:
"Today is a huge victory for children and families in Ohio. Amended SB104 is common-sense legislation that will guarantee the only people entering young ladies’ private spaces are female, not men claiming to be female.
"Thank you to Representative Beth Lear and Representative Adam Bird for sponsoring this legislation and to all the House and Senate members who voted for it. We call on Governor DeWine to sign SB104 into law to protect the privacy of women and young girls."
To become law, a bill must pass both chambers of the Ohio Statehouse to be sent to the governor for his approval.
