BREAKING NEWS: Ohio Senate Introduces Bill Requiring Schools to Teach the Success Sequence
COLUMBUS—The Ohio Senate today introduced legislation that would add the Success Sequence to the required middle and high school curriculum in Ohio schools. The Success Sequence, a proven formula to help young adults avoid poverty and achieve the American Dream, is one of the key policy solutions to strengthen Ohio families suggested in Center for Christian Virtue’s Hope and a Future report.
Sponsored by Senator Al Cutrona (R-Canfield), Senate Bill 156 (SB156) requires the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce to develop standards and model curriculum for teaching the Success Sequence in grades 6 through 12. Under SB156, students would also need to receive Success Sequence instruction in at least one class before they are eligible to graduate high school.
The Success Sequence is based on research from diverse institutions such as the Brookings Institute, the American Enterprise Institute, and federal government agencies. The findings reveal that 97 percent of individuals who follow three simple steps do not live in poverty as adults if they:
Complete at least a high school education;
Obtain full-time work; and
Marry before having children.
“The goal of this legislation is simple. When we invest in building strong children, we can save some of the expense of rebuilding broken adults,” said Center for Christian Virtue (CCV) Policy Director David Mahan. “Encouraging education, hard work, and the importance of marriage and family helps reduce the risk of ever falling into poverty, and a whole host of other negative outcomes, in the first place.”
The next step in the legislative process is for the bill to begin receiving hearings in the Senate Education committee.
