BREAKING NEWS: General Assembly Moves to Stop Foreign Interference in Ohio Elections
COLUMBUS – In Friday’s special session, the Ohio General Assembly passed legislation to prohibit foreign interference in Ohio elections.
While non-US residents were already prohibited from contributing to candidate elections, they could give to ballot issue campaigns. Last year alone, one foreign-funded political organization poured millions of dollars into Ohio’s August special election to defeat an effort to protect the Ohio Constitution and millions more into the November election to legalize late-term abortion.
The bill now heads to Governor DeWine, who convened the special session to address the issue. He is expected to sign the bill, known as HB1.
The following statement is from Center for Christian Virtue President Aaron Baer:
“Last year, a foreign-backed political organization poured millions into our state to lie and manipulate voters. It should not be a partisan issue to say that Swiss billionaires should not influence Ohio elections.
“While you’d expect this legislation to receive bi-partisan support, it’s sad to see the vote fall along party lines. Ultimately, however, Ohio voices and voters will be protected by this legislation, and I’m grateful to President Huffman and Speaker Stephens for passing the legislation, and to Governor DeWine for convening the special session.”
