AG Yost Calls Out Columbus School District for Illegally Refusing to Bus Private School Students
COLUMBUS–Yesterday, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost sent a cease-and-desist letter to the Columbus City School District warning them to resume transporting hundreds of charter- and private-school students or face a lawsuit from the state for their illegal behavior.
Ohio law requires public schools to provide transportation for nonpublic school students who live within district boundaries and no more than 30 minutes from their assigned public school. Columbus City Schools stopped complying with the law just before the start of the 2024-25 academic year and provided little notice to the students' parents.
The following statement is from CCV's Ohio Christian Education Network Executive Director Troy McIntosh:
"Columbus City Schools’ decision to cut legally required transportation to over 1,700 students just as the school year was set to begin was grossly unjust. The state distributes the funds to the district to bus these students, yet the district chose to pay fines rather than fulfill their legal and ethical obligation to provide them transportation to school.
"We want to thank Attorney General Yost for upholding the rule of law and the rights of taxpaying Christian school families and students."
