Statement on Gov. Kasich’s Veto of the Heartbeat Bill

Statement on Governor Kasich’s Heartless Veto of the Heartbeat BillCitizens for Community Values President Aaron Baer responds to Governor Kasich’s veto of the Heartbeat Bill

COLUMBUS – Earlier today, Governor John Kasich vetoed the Heartbeat Bill (HB 258) which would have prohibited abortion in Ohio once an unborn child’s heartbeat is detected. The following statement is from Citizens for Community Values President Aaron Baer on the veto:“Gov. Kasich just ensured that 57 children will continue to perish from abortion every day in Ohio by vetoing the Heartbeat Bill. Instead of showing compassion for unborn children and their mothers, he chose to stand with the abortion industry.Governor Kasich once famously said “Now, when you die and get to the meeting with St. Peter, he’s probably not going to ask you much about what you did about keeping government small. But he is going to ask you what you did for the poor. You better have a good answer.”I likewise think that St. Peter isn’t going to be interested in how many trips to New Hampshire we’ve made, or how many times we’ve been on CNN. However, I think St. Peter will be interested in what we’ve done to help the vulnerable. And there is no more vulnerable a population in Ohio than the unborn.Despite today’s veto, the fight to enact the Heartbeat Bill goes on. Today, we call for a commitment from Speaker Ryan Smith and Senate President Larry Obhof to lead the General Assembly in overriding the Governor’s veto immediately following Christmas. The votes are there. It’s time to get the job done.”For questions, contact Citizens for Community Values, info@ccv.org, or 513.733.5775.
