WATCH TODAY: House and Senate Hearings for Constitution Protection Bills

COLUMBUS–House Joint Resolution 1 (HJR1), sponsored by Representative Brian Stewart (R-Ashville), is scheduled to receive a proponent and interested party hearing before the House Constitutional Resolutions Committee today–Tuesday, April 17–at 9:00 am. CCV Legislative Liaison Nilani Jawahar will be testifying.

HJR1's partner bill, Senate Joint Resolution 2 (SJR2), sponsored by Senators Theresa Gavarone (R-Bowling Green) and Rob McColley (R-Napoleon), and Senate Bill 92 (SB92), also sponsored by Sens. Gavarone and McColley, are scheduled to receive their third hearing and a possible vote in the Senate General Government Committee today–Tuesday, April 17–at 2:30 pm.

If passed, HJR1/SJR2 would allow Ohioans to vote whether to raise the approval threshold to amend our Constitution to 60 percent. The new threshold would strike an important balance between safeguarding Ohio from deep-pocketed, out-of-state interests wishing to enshrine their money-making schemes into Ohio's Constitution and protecting the fundamental rights of Ohio citizens to set the course of our state governance.

SB92 would schedule a special August election for Ohioans to vote on the 60-percent threshold to amend our Constitution. This would protect the state's foundational document ahead of the November election, which may include a ballot initiative to permanently legalize abortion up to birth, remove parental consent for minors to receive abortions or sex-change surgeries, and outlaw hospital health and safety standards.

Committee hearings are open to the public at the Ohio Statehouse.

Unable to watch the hearings live? Once they’re posted, you can watch the House recording or Senate recording.

To become law, a bill must go through both Chambers to be sent to the governor for his signature.
