TODAY: Riley Gaines to join expert witnesses testifying in support of protecting girls' sports

COLUMBUS—Later today, Riley Gaines will testify in support of protecting girls' sports in Ohio through Substitute House Bill 68 (HB68). Riley graduated from the University of Kentucky, where she was a 12-time All-American swimmer, and has made waves for speaking out after tying University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas, a biological male competing on the women's team, at the 2022 NCAA Division 1 Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships.

HB68 combines two bills that seek to acknowledge the inherent differences between men and women:

  1. The Save Women’s Sports Act, sponsored by Representative Jena Powell (R-Arcanum), would preserve the integrity of women’s sports by protecting female athletes from having to compete against biological males.

  2. The SAFE (Saving Adolescents From Experimentation) Act, sponsored by Representative Gary Click (R-Vickery), would ban dangerous puberty-blocking drugs, wrong-sex hormones, and transgender surgeries on children.

Other expert witnesses testifying in support of HB68 today include physicians, parents of children who have experienced gender dysphoria, detransitioners, and an attorney.

HB68 is scheduled to receive a proponent hearing before the Senate Government Oversight Committee today—Tuesday, November 28—at 2:00 pm.

Please note that the Committee's agenda may include other points for consideration, and HB68 may not be the first to be heard. Committee hearings at the Ohio Statehouse are open to the public.

To become law, a bill must go through both Chambers of the Ohio Statehouse to be sent to the governor for his approval. Read the bill and see its progress through the legislature here.
