BREAKING NEWS: Ohio House Passes Bill to Preserve Single-Sex Bathroom Privacy

COLUMBUS–Last night, the Ohio House of Representatives passed House Bill 183 (HB183) sponsored by Representatives Beth Lear (R-Galena) and Adam Bird (R-New Richmond) by a 60-31 vote. The bill now heads to the Ohio Senate.

HB183 would require schools and colleges to designate separate bathrooms, locker rooms, and overnight accommodations for males and females in the school building, as well as any facility used for a school-sponsored event. If passed into law, HB183 would ensure men cannot claim to be female and enter women’s private spaces and vice versa.

The following statement is from CCV Policy Director David Mahan:

"Last night was a good night for children and families in Ohio when the Bathroom Bill was voted out of the House at the very last minute. This common-sense legislation will guarantee the only people entering women’s private spaces are women, not predators claiming to be female.

"Thank you to Representative Beth Lear and Representative Adam Bird for sponsoring HB183 and to all the House members who voted for it. We call on the Ohio Senate to pass this important legislation to protect the privacy of women and young girls."

To become law, a bill must go through both chambers of the Ohio Statehouse to be sent to the governor for his approval.
