BREAKING: Ohio Senate Passes Constitution Protection Bills

COLUMBUS–Senate Joint Resolution 2 (SJR2), and Senate Bill 92 (SB92), sponsored by Senators Theresa Gavarone (R-Bowling Green) and Rob McColley (R-Napoleon), were voted out of the Ohio Senate this afternoon.

House Joint Resolution 1 (HJR1), sponsored by Representative Brian Stewart (R-Ashville), is SJR1's partner bill and awaits a vote in the Ohio House. Speaker of the House Jason Stephens has the power to bring HJR1 to a floor vote. House Bill 144 (HB144), sponsored by Representative Susan Manchester (R-Waynesfield), is SB92's partner bill and awaits hearings in the House Government Oversight Committee.

To get these bills passed into law, HJR1 must be passed in the House and either HB144 or SB92 needs to go through the House for approval before being sent to the Governor for his approval.

If passed into law, HJR1/SJR2 would allow Ohioans to vote whether to raise the approval threshold to amend our Constitution to 60 percent. The new threshold would strike an important balance between safeguarding Ohio from deep-pocketed, out-of-state interests wishing to enshrine their money-making schemes into Ohio's Constitution and protecting the fundamental rights of Ohio citizens to set the course of our state governance.

HB144/SB92 would schedule a special August election for Ohioans to vote on the 60-percent threshold to amend our Constitution. This would protect the state's foundational document ahead of the November election, which may include a ballot initiative that would permanently legalize abortion up to birth, remove parental consent for minors to receive abortions or sex-change surgeries, and exempt abortion clinics from adhering to hospital health and safety standards.

To become law, a bill must go through both Chambers to be sent to the governor for his signature.
