ACTION ALERT: The Most Dangerous Bill in the Nation Heads to Senate
The Equality Act Reintroduced In US Congress, Putting Women, Children, Businesses, and Ministries at Risk
COLUMBUS—The U.S. House of Representatives passed the greatest threat to women, children, and religious freedom in America today, the so-called Equality Act (H.R.5), on February 25. It now heads for a vote in the U.S. Senate.
The bill adds “Sexual Orientation” and “Gender Identity” to anti-discrimination laws, and expands the definition of public accommodations include places or establishments that provide (1) exhibitions, recreation, exercise, amusement, gatherings, or displays; (2) goods, services, or programs; and (3) transportation services.
This legislation is similar to the "Un"Fairness Act in Ohio, which has been introduced in Ohio for the last decade. Thanks to the work of pro-family lawmakers, CCV, and our supporters and allies across the state, however, it has not passed.
The (In)Equality Act creates a laundry list of problems for businesses, ministries, medical professionals, women, and children.
The host of negative impacts of this bill include:
Requiring biological men to be allowed in women’s restrooms, locker rooms, and showers if they claim they identify as women.
Prohibiting Christian schools and ministries from only hiring employees who adhere to their statement of faith regarding sexuality.
Requiring boys to be allowed to play in girls’ sports in public schools if they claim they identify as women.
Forcing women’s homeless shelters and domestic violence shelters to allow biological men who claim to identify as women to bathe and bunk with women.
Allowing state government to remove children from parents’ custody who don’t consent to dangerous conversion/hormone therapy.
Forcing doctors to participate in “gender transition” surgeries and procedures.
Requiring businesses to participate in same-sex weddings, even if the wedding violates their religious beliefs.
The truth is, HR 5 is as unnecessary as it is dangerous. This law doesn’t create equality, it creates massive inequality by making Christians, women, and children second-class citizens by restricting their religious freedom and privacy rights.
