CCV to Supreme Court: Protect Women’s Health & Safety
CCV and 27 other pro-family organizations nationwide urge the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold Louisiana’s Abortion Clinic Regulations.
COLUMBUS — Citizens for Community Values, the James Dobson Family Policy Institute, the Louisiana Family Forum and 24 pro-family organizations from across the country sent a friend-of-the-court brief to the United States Supreme Court in the June Medical Service, LLC v. Gee. The brief supports a Louisiana law requiring doctors who perform abortions have hospital admitting privileges within 30 miles of the clinic.
The law was passed in Louisiana in 2014. After being blocked by a lower court, the law was upheld by the 5th Circuit. The law is now on appeal at the U.S. Supreme Court. Ohio has a similar regulation in effect today, though Louisiana’s is more strict.
“Louisiana’s law guarantees that women harmed by abortion have the best opportunity to survive,” said Aaron Baer, president of Citizens for Community Values. “If the abortion industry truly cared about the health and safety of women, they wouldn’t be wasting taxpayer dollars fighting common sense regulations.”
The brief argues that the Court should uphold the Louisiana law “because this Court’s current abortion jurisprudence not only makes it difficult to educate the public and influence public policy on lawful pro-life measures, but has weakened the public’s confidence in an impartial justice system and the Rule of Law.”
Earlier this week, 11 members of Ohio’s congressional delegation also sent a brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in support of life. Among the almost 200 signers of the pro-life brief included:
Sen. Rob Portman
Rep. Steve Chabot
Rep. Warren Davidson
Rep. Anthony Gonzalez
Rep. Bill Johnson
Rep. Jim Jordan
Rep. Bob Gibbs
Rep. Bob Latta
Rep. Troy Balderson
Rep. Mike Turner
Rep. Brad Wenstrup
“Time and time again, Ohio has proven to be a pro-life state. We are blessed to have leaders in Ohio willing to stand up for the will of the people and defend the most vulnerable,” said Baer.
Oral argument in June Medical Service, LLC v. Gee is currently scheduled for March 4, 2020
